Maker’s Mark Unveils Star Hill Farm Whisky: A Step Towards Sustainability and Innovation
Maker’s Mark, the renowned distillery, is charting a new course in product innovation with the introduction of its first-ever wheat whisky, Star Hill Farm Whisky. Established in 1953, this marks a significant moment for the company as it embraces change and sustainability. Named after the 1,100-acre farm that hosts the distillery, this limited annual release will showcase various mash bills in each iteration.
2025 Release Details
For the inaugural 2025 release, two unique mash bills will be featured:
- First Mash Bill: 70% soft red winter wheat and 30% malted barley, echoing the base of Maker’s Mark’s traditional bourbon.
- Second Mash Bill: 100% malted soft red winter wheat.
According to Dr. Blake Layfield, Maker’s Mark master distiller, the 2025 edition offers a “complex yet balanced blend of seven- and eight-year whiskies, bottled uncut at cask strength.” He describes the sensory experience, stating, “The nose captivates with notes of buttery caramel, golden raisins and gingerbread. On the palate, you’ll find a soft, bright mix of honeyed toffee, chocolate covered cherries, and a hint of apple pie spice. The finish is smooth and inviting, with toasted pecans and soft cinnamon bringing it all together.”
Commitment to Environmental Sustainability
The launch of Star Hill Farm Whisky underscores Maker’s Mark’s dedication to sustainable farming practices through the creation of the Maker’s Mark Regenerative Alliance. This initiative aims to convert one million acres of conventional farmland into regenerative farmland. The Natural Resources Defense Council defines regenerative farming as a method to enhance soil and ecosystem health, while also addressing inequity and aiming for a more sustainable future.
To further this mission, Maker’s Mark has partnered with organizations such as Regenifed and Understanding Ag, which are dedicated to providing education and support to promote healthy farming ecosystems. Rob Samuels, managing director of Maker’s Mark, expressed that, “The launch of Star Hill Farm Whisky will expand our platform to advance regenerative agriculture beyond our business, fostering a more sustainable future for our industry, people and planet.”

In its pursuit of environmental responsibility, Maker’s Mark has achieved notable recognition, becoming the first distillery in Kentucky to earn B Corp Certification and the first globally to receive Regenified Certification. Additionally, Star Hill Farm Whisky stands out as the first whisky to obtain Estate Whiskey certification, indicating that it is entirely produced on the distillery’s estate using locally sourced grains.
