Apple has officially entered the foldable-phone market with the iPhone Duo, introducing a device that combines the portability of a smartphone with a significantly larger screen when opened.
The company unveiled the device during its major product presentation in Cupertino, California, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. The launch also marked the first major iPhone presentation led by new Apple CEO John Ternus.
The iPhone Duo uses a folding design that allows the device to operate in two configurations. When closed, it uses a smaller external display suitable for everyday smartphone tasks. When opened, a 7.6-inch internal display provides substantially more screen space.
That format is aimed at users who regularly use their phones for video, gaming, productivity, reading and multitasking. Instead of carrying a conventional phone alongside a tablet, users can access a larger display from the same device.
Apple has built the Duo with a titanium frame and a redesigned hinge. The phone contains two batteries and is powered by the A20 Pro chip, giving it the processing platform used in Apple's latest high-end devices.
The software has also been adapted to the foldable format. Apple's operating system can rearrange applications and content when the device moves between its closed and open configurations.
The result is a phone that is intended to change how users interact with the device rather than simply offering a different screen size.
The launch is particularly notable for men and other consumers who use smartphones as central productivity tools. A larger display can provide additional space for email, documents, maps, calendars and other applications while keeping the device small enough to carry when folded.
The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999, placing it at the very top of the smartphone market. That price reflects the specialized hardware required for the folding display and hinge while also giving Apple room to distinguish the device from its conventional iPhone lineup.
Apple is not the first company to pursue this concept. Samsung and other Android manufacturers have released multiple generations of foldable smartphones, giving consumers several years of experience with the form factor.
Apple's entry could nevertheless have a major effect on the category. The company has a large global customer base, and its decision to produce a foldable iPhone could encourage existing iPhone users to consider the format.
The company also introduced the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max. The new Pro models use the A20 Pro chip and feature upgraded camera hardware, including a variable-aperture main camera.
Artificial intelligence is another major component of the new lineup. Apple is expanding Apple Intelligence and Siri capabilities while emphasizing a combination of on-device processing and private cloud computing.
For everyday users, the combination of a new physical form and expanded AI functionality represents a broader change in the smartphone experience. The phone is becoming not only a communication device but also a platform for photography, entertainment, productivity and personalized software.
Still, the foldable design introduces tradeoffs. The Duo is more expensive than conventional iPhones and has additional moving hardware. Consumers must also decide whether a larger screen is worth carrying a thicker device.
Durability remains another consideration for the foldable category. Manufacturers have improved flexible displays and hinge mechanisms over several generations, but foldable phones still involve more complex construction than conventional smartphones.
Apple's approach will be closely watched because the company often influences consumer expectations across the wider technology industry.
If the iPhone Duo attracts strong demand, competing manufacturers may face pressure to improve their own foldable products. Accessories, applications and mobile operating systems could also evolve as developers respond to more widespread adoption of large foldable displays.
The product also represents a significant leadership moment for Ternus. His first major iPhone presentation comes with one of the company's most visible hardware redesigns in years.
The iPhone Duo will therefore serve as both a consumer technology product and a test of Apple's strategy for the next generation of smartphones.
For users who value large screens but prefer carrying one device, the foldable iPhone offers a new option. Whether that convenience justifies its premium price will become clearer as consumers begin using the device in everyday situations.
Apple's entry does not guarantee that foldable phones will replace conventional smartphones, but it ensures that the category will receive far greater attention from the company's customers and competitors alike.
