Washington Commanders Boost Roster with Key Acquisitions
Deebo Samuel’s Move to Washington
The Washington Commanders have made a significant roster move by acquiring wide receiver Deebo Samuel from the San Francisco 49ers. This trade, which concluded on March 1st, allows Washington to secure Samuel for the final year of his contract, which now includes a boosted incentive structure worth an additional $3 million. The development solidifies his cap number at $17.55 million for the upcoming season.
During his introductory press conference, Samuel expressed gratitude for the faith the Commanders are placing in him. He stated, “They put so much faith in me. I can’t come here and disappoint them.” The wide receiver, known for his dynamic playing style, is eager to demonstrate his value after facing challenges due to injuries last season, in which he managed 806 scrimmage yards.
Transition from San Francisco
Samuel’s move marks the end of a six-year tenure with the 49ers, during which he recorded impressive stats, including 4,792 receiving yards and 22 touchdowns, along with 1,143 rushing yards and 20 touchdowns. Before the trade, Samuel had communicated to 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan his desire to change teams, a decision he found emotionally taxing due to their established relationship. He reflected, “One of the hardest things was to step into the office and tell Kyle about this because of the relationship we built.”
Despite his connections in San Francisco, Samuel was excited about his prospects with Washington, highlighting his motivation to contribute to a winning culture. He declared, “I like winners. I’m not one of your biggest losers. They certainly had a good team and they just stood out.”
Adding Depth with Michael Gallup
In conjunction with Samuel’s acquisition, Washington has also signed Michael Gallup to a one-year contract. Gallup, previously with the Dallas Cowboys, aims to revitalize his career following a difficult season. He admitted to struggling mentally during the last season and is eager to embark on a fresh chapter with the Commanders.
The 27-year-old receiver previously accumulated 266 receptions over six seasons with Dallas. He noted, “There’s a lot of meat on that bone. I have a lot of fire.” Gallup’s experience under Commanders’ head coach Dan Quinn, who was Dallas’ defensive coordinator during his time there, adds further familiarity and potential synergy.

The Washington Commanders, having finished a promising 12-5 season and reaching the NFC Championship Game, are making strategic moves to bolster their offensive capabilities.
