The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) briefly suspended operations at multiple Florida airports on Thursday night following a failure during a SpaceX Starship test flight. This incident, part of SpaceX’s ongoing test flights, is the second occurrence this year that resulted in debris falling from the sky, significantly impacting commercial air traffic.

Airports affected included major hubs such as Miami International Airport, as well as others in Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, and Orlando. The FAA confirmed it activated a “Debris Response Area” to manage the situation, resulting in temporary restrictions on air traffic in the region.
Previous Test Mishap
On March 6, during an earlier test flight, the FAA instructed SpaceX to conduct a thorough investigation due to the loss of the Starship vehicle. In its latest statement, the FAA explained the necessary measures taken to ensure aircraft safety, including decelerating flights near the debris area and halting departures from affected airports.
SpaceX’s Response
In a social media update, SpaceX acknowledged the issue, stating: “During Starship’s ascent burn, the vehicle experienced a rapid unscheduled disassembly and contact was lost. Our team immediately began coordination with safety officials to implement pre-planned contingency responses.”
Flight and Communication Loss
The test flight, which commenced at 6:30 PM ET from SpaceX’s site near Brownsville, Texas, saw problems arise as several engines on the upper-stage Starship were reported to have turned off prematurely. Communication was subsequently lost, although the launch tower successfully managed to capture the Super Heavy booster.
Regulatory Implications
Earlier in January, another test resulted in flights being diverted when debris from a Starship rocket fell in the vicinity, prompting the FAA to issue warnings about potential hazards in the airspace.
