Contract Details
Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen has been awarded a groundbreaking contract worth $330 million, with $250 million guaranteed through the 2030 season. This agreement marks the highest guaranteed amount ever provided to an NFL player, eclipsing the previous record held by the Cleveland Browns’ Deshaun Watson, who had $230 million guaranteed.
Prior to this extension, Allen’s contract was set to last until 2028. The new deal elevates his annual earnings to an average of $55 million, making it the second highest for quarterbacks, trailing only Dallas Cowboys’ Dak Prescott, who holds a top figure of $60 million.
Historical Achievement
Allen’s impressive performance this past season earned him the MVP award, making him the first player in NFL history to accumulate at least 25 touchdown passes and 10 rushing touchdowns while throwing fewer than 10 interceptions in a single season. His 2024 season stats included 28 passing touchdowns, 12 rushing touchdowns, and only six interceptions.
Over the course of his career, Allen has amassed a total of 260 touchdowns (both passing and rushing), surpassing Patrick Mahomes by 29 touchdowns for the most touchdowns recorded by a quarterback within their first seven seasons.
Focus on Improvement and Leadership
Heading into the 2024 season, Allen concentrated on minimizing turnovers, which was reflected in his career-best performance with only eight turnovers. His leadership has also been pivotal for the Bills, as he served as one of the team’s two captains, embodying a consistent presence for his teammates.
“His consistent leadership, Josh Allen’s leadership was the biggest reason we did what we did this season,” said Bills head coach Sean McDermott. “It’s not an easy job, and he’s doing it for us every season now.”
A Historic Milestone
With this MVP title, Allen joins a select group of players who have won the MVP award without being named to the first-team All-Pro, a feat achieved by only two others in NFL history: John Elway in 1987 and Steve McNair in 2003.
Allen’s remarkable performance has solidified his position as one of the top quarterbacks in the league, enabling him to maintain a streak of producing at least 40 total touchdowns across five consecutive seasons—an NFL record.
Looking Ahead
As he enters the 2025 season, Allen is set to continue his development under coordinator Joe Brady, marking his second full season in that role. Currently on a path toward another AFC Championship Game appearance, Allen is determined to achieve his first Super Bowl, having faced the Kansas City Chiefs and Mahomes in the postseason without victory thus far.
In addition to Allen’s new contract, the Bills have also secured other key players, with defensive end Greg Rousseau receiving an $80 million contract over four years, linebacker Terrell Bernard receiving a $50 million deal, and receiver Khalil Shakir signing a four-year deal worth $53 million.
