In 2023, over 540,000 industrial robots were deployed globally, pushing the total number of active industrial robots past the four million mark, according to data from the International Federation of Robotics (IFR). While these robots are efficient at handling repetitive tasks, they often struggle with precision work and adaptability in dynamic environments, which continues to necessitate human intervention in various industries.
RLWRLD: Bridging the Gap in Robotics
Emerging from South Korea, RLWRLD is a startup aiming to overcome the traditional limitations of industrial robots through its innovative deployment of AI technology. The company has developed a foundational AI model that merges large language models with established robotics software, thereby enabling robots to execute quick and agile movements alongside basic logical reasoning.
“Using RLWRLD’s foundation model, processes that require a lot of manual work can be completely automated by learning and copying human expertise, making work environments more efficient,” stated Jung-Hee Ryu, the company’s founder and CEO.
Funding and Strategic Collaborations
RLWRLD has recently secured 21 billion KRW (approximately $14.8 million) in seed funding, spearheaded by venture capital firm Hashed, alongside contributions from Mirae Asset Venture Investment and Global Brain. The funding will facilitate proof-of-concept projects with strategic investors and enhance the company’s capabilities through the acquisition of computing infrastructure, including GPUs and robotic devices for extensive data collection.
The startup has garnered interest from major strategic investors, including notable companies such as Ana Group and LG Electronics, which reflects its potential in the robotics sector. This funding will also support the development of advanced robotic capabilities, including five-fingered hand movements—an ability that has yet to be demonstrated by competitors like Tesla and others.

RLWRLD is positioning itself for significant advancements in automation, with plans to explore human-centric workflows in collaboration with its investors. A demonstration of its humanoid-based autonomous action model is anticipated later this year. Background and Vision
Founded in 2024, RLWRLD represents Jung-Hee Ryu’s third entrepreneurial venture. Ryu previously established Olaworks, which was acquired by Intel in 2012, and later founded a startup accelerator focused on deep technology. Observing the rapid growth of AI startups in regions like the U.S., Europe, and China, Ryu identified a gap in similar ventures within Korea and Japan, prompting his decision to launch RLWRLD.
In order to build a strong foundation, Ryu collaborated with six professors from prestigious South Korean institutions including KAIST and SNU. This partnership emphasizes RLWRLD’s commitment to harnessing regional strengths in manufacturing while focusing on robotics foundational models.

RLWRLD is not alone in its mission; it faces competition from startups such as Skild AI and Physical Intelligence, as well as established firms like Google DeepMind and Nvidia. However, Ryu is confident in his team of AI and robotics experts and the unique capabilities of their high-degree-of-freedom reference robot.

With an eye on generating revenue as soon as this year through proof-of-concept initiatives and partnerships, RLWRLD’s ambitious goals extend towards serving factories, logistics operations, and even domestic environments.
