New Orleans Saints Acquire Davon Godchaux from New England Patriots
The New Orleans Saints have announced a trade agreement with the New England Patriots, acquiring defensive tackle Davon Godchaux in exchange for a seventh-round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, according to ESPN sources.
Details of the Trade
This move comes after the Patriots granted Godchaux permission to seek a trade back in February. The 30-year-old player, who is heading into his ninth NFL season, is currently under a two-year contract extension worth $9.5 million that he signed last July. He is set to earn $4 million in 2025 and $5.5 million in 2026.
Contract and Salary Cap Implications
If the Saints do not renegotiate Godchaux’s contract, his salary cap hit will be $5 million in 2025 and $7.5 million in 2026. The team had aimed to create $40 million in cap space as they approached March and the free agency period. Recently, contract restructurings for key players like center Eric McCoy and quarterback Derek Carr have opened up approximately $38 million in cap space for 2025.
Godchaux’s Career Highlights
Standing at 6 feet 3 inches and weighing 300 pounds, Godchaux has made a significant impact during his four seasons with the Patriots, participating in all 68 regular-season games and starting 67. He primarily played as a nose tackle, focusing on run-stopping defense. He began his NFL career with the Miami Dolphins after being drafted in the fifth round out of Louisiana State University (LSU) in 2017.
Coaching Changes and Defensive Strategy
The Patriots are changing their defensive approach under new head coach Mike Vrabel and defensive coordinator Terrell Williams. Their coaching strategy may not align well with players like Godchaux, who excel in a traditional nose tackle role.
Impact on the Saints’ Defense
This trade could signal a shift in the Saints’ defensive strategy. Historically, the Saints have utilized a 4-3 base defense under former coordinator Dennis Allen, who was replaced midway through the 2024 season. The new head coach, Kellen Moore, has appointed Brandon Staley as the defensive coordinator, who is known for his implementation of a 3-4 base defense. Additionally, former LSU coach Bo Davis has been brought in to strengthen the defensive line.
Struggles in Defense
In 2024, the Saints posted the second-worst defense in the league, allowing an average of 141.4 rushing yards per game. While the team has not yet commented on further defensive changes, they currently feature other notable tackles including Khalen Saunders, who carries a cap hit of $4.6 million, and Nathan Shepherd with a cap count of $7 million, alongside first-round pick Brian Bresee, who has a cap figure of $3.3 million.
